ASPC-Perryville Clears Incident Determined To Be Non-Hazardous

August 15, 2023

ASPC-Perryville, in collaboration with emergency response crews from the Cities of Phoenix, Goodyear, Buckeye and Glendale have cleared a morning incident originally believed to have stemmed from a hazardous substance.

As part of the response, crews took a sample to determine the nature of the substance on scene, and the preliminary test results indicated the substance in question was non-hazardous.

During the incident, out of an abundance of caution, a total of 12 ADCRR staff members and 2 inmates were transported to a local hospital for evaluation.  Since then, all staff members and the two inmates have been released from the hospital. The two inmates are back in their housing unit and prison operations are resuming as normal.

The incident began at approximately 6:30AM this morning when a small bag of a white powder substance was found on a transport vehicle.  The unknown substance was handed to a Correctional Officer who then reported symptoms that included feeling dizzy and light-headed. Out of an abundance of caution, the officer was transported to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation and has since been released.

ADCRR takes the health and safety of staff and inmates seriously.  The ASPC-Perryville Warden, her team, and responding emergency crews managed the situation well, ensuring that what began as a concerning situation was met with swift action and quickly de-escalated.  ADCRR expresses our gratitude to the responding Fire Departments and partner agencies.
