Overview

Situated adjacent to State Highway 87, ASPC Winslow is located three miles south of the city of Winslow serving as one of Arizona’s principal correctional institutions. Groundbreaking for the facility began in 1985 followed by construction in 1986 through 1990. To date, the Kaibab unit has a total of 800 general population beds with 39 detention beds where the Coronado unit consists of a total of 492 beds.  An additional 334 minimum beds and 12 detention beds were included when the Apache unit was added to the Winslow Complex in 1995.

The ASPC-Winslow administration teams strive to reduce: relapse, revocation, and recidivism by holding residents responsible and accountable throughout their time on the unit while still encouraging them to pursue their educational wellbeing. Each unit promotes quality programming, education and resident- engaged activities to enhance their life skills, enabling them to be better-suited for a stronger, renewed beginning in the community.

Programs

Work Crews

The minimum custody units, Coronado and Apache, provide residents with the opportunity to participate in work crews that are regularly sent off site within the local surrounding communities for community betterment and beautification projects. Both Apache and Coronado, provide the Wildland Fire crew, Healthy Forest Initiative crew, Arizona Department of Transportation as well as Arizona Correctional Industries, which produces trusses for civilian contractors. While these crews are working in the community they are acquiring new job skills and work techniques that may assist them with future employment. The Kaibab unit offers a range of education and vocational training opportunities for residents, allowing them to enter the workforce as skilled and equipped personnel for the community’s workforce. The Kaibab Unit has crews that assist residents in receiving food preparation certifications/serve safe, and health cards; teaches them how to manage warehouse inventories for large populations; teaches them landscaping skills, floor maintenance skills, and how to effectively work in culturally diverse environments; provides on the job communication skills, maintenance skills, barber skills, and even construction skills.

The Winslow units offer a wide variety of academic and life skill programs. Education is open Monday through Friday (except holidays). Certified teachers oversee the academic programs area.
