Inmates from ASPC-Tucson Receive High School Diploma at Graduation Ceremony

TUCSON – The Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) is proud to announce that 13 inmates at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Tucson have graduated from its Success Academy high school program. Eight of the graduating inmates participated today in a noontime commencement ceremony inside the Whetstone Unit, where they received diplomas before a gathering of family and prison staff.

The Success Academy-Tucson is the first high school program offered by ADC whereby adult learners can earn or complete a high school education. The Department has sought to offer continuing education programs and opportunities for our adult population. This open enrollment program enables student inmates to work at their own pace and finish at different times during the year.  Today’s commencement honored students who have recently completed their coursework, earning a high school diploma.

“Our belief is that education is a valuable means to help inmates successfully transition out of the correctional system,” said ADC Director Charles Ryan. “When they reenter society better educated and employable, it reduces the likelihood they’ll reoffend – and that has a positive impact in the community.”

Using the same standardized curriculum used in high schools, ADC created the Success Academy to focus on our adult learners and bridge the gap that would make high school diplomas a viable option to getting a GED. Previously, only minors adjudicated as adults were able to earn a high school diploma, instead of a GED. In 2014, the program for minors, called the Life Learning Academy, became accredited by AdvancEd.

ADC’s goal is to eventually implement high school programs at all its prison complexes around the state, and its education department is committing resources and technology to make that possible.
