(PHOENIX) – Wednesday, July 16, 2014 – Two Arizona Department of Corrections inmates have entered guilty pleas in Navajo County Superior Court and will each serve an added 10 years for assaulting a Corrections Officer at the Winslow prison complex on July 19, 2013.
Inmate Guillermo Caughlan, 25, ADC #223125, and inmate Salvador Reyes, 27, ADC #248550, each entered guilty pleas to one count each of Dangerous Assault by a Prisoner, a Class 2 felony. Each inmate was sentenced to the maximum term of 10 years, which will be added to the sentences for their previous crimes.
In the 2013 incident, the two inmates attacked the officer from behind as inmates from that housing location were being turned out for meal service. Additional officers immediately responded to the scene to restrain the inmates and render aid to the officer.
“This was a despicable and cowardly attack on an ADC Officer, and the inmates responsible are being held accountable for their criminal actions,” Corrections Director Charles Ryan stated. “Assaults of any kind against department personnel are intolerable and it’s my commitment that such incidents will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I am grateful to the Navajo County Attorney’s Office for their efforts to ensure that justice has been done.”
