Department of Corrections Investigating Inmate Death as a Potential Homicide

FLORENCE (Wednesday, February 15, 2017) – Criminal investigators with the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) are investigating the death of inmate Apollo Ortega, 31, ADC #249551, as a potential homicide.

Prison staff attempted life saving measures upon observing inmate Ortega unresponsive at his assigned housing location. Responding paramedics pronounced him dead on Monday, February 13.

Inmate Ortega was transferred to ADC custody in 2009 on two life sentences out of Pima County for two counts of 1st degree murder and another count of attempted murder. He was housed at the maximum custody Special Management Unit at Arizona State Prison Complex–Eyman.

The criminal investigation is ongoing. All inmate deaths are investigated in consultation with the county medical examiner's office.
