PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Corrections today published revised execution procedures, contained in Department Order #710. The updated procedures are available on the ADC website (execution procedures have been updated again on May 30th, 2017, please use the following link: DO 710

Some of the more substantive revisions proactively implemented by the Department include:

  • Greater transparency of the execution process, providing for additional audio and visual coverage for witnesses in attendance.
  • Increased specificity regarding the different drug protocols.
  • Enhanced safeguards regarding the verification, quantity, and expiration date of the chemicals.
  • Additional privileges afforded to the inmate’s legal team, including access to temporary office space in the prison administration building and permission to bring one mobile phone, one tablet, and one laptop computer on the scheduled execution day.

The United States District Court has been notified of the publication of the revised procedures and the State has moved to lift the stay on pending federal litigation brought by several death row inmates and the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona challenging the Department’s prior protocol.

Pursuant to the District Court’s Order, the State will not seek execution warrants until that case has been resolved in District Court.
