Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan announced today that his order of Thursday, July 24 to commission an independent review of the execution of inmate Joseph Wood is now underway through the state procurement process. This review was directed by Governor Brewer and initiated by the department immediately following the execution on Wednesday, July 23.
Arizona Department of Corrections inmate Joseph Wood, #086279, was executed by lethal injection at 3:49 PM Wednesday, July 23rd at the Arizona State Prison Complex - Florence. The two drug protocol was administered at 1:52 PM and the execution was completed at 3:49 PM.
Arizona Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan today issued a statement regarding the review of the execution of inmate Joseph Wood, ADC #086279: "[...] Pursuant to the Governor’s instruction, I am committed to a thorough, transparent and comprehensive review process. We will ensure all the facts are gathered and that fact-based conclusions are reached regarding the length of time it took for the execution to be lawfully completed. I have also been advised by the Arizona Attorney General that his office will not seek any warrants of execution prior to the completion of the review of this matter.”
Two Arizona Department of Corrections inmates have entered guilty pleas in Navajo County Superior Court and will each serve an added 10 years for assaulting a Corrections Officer at the Winslow prison complex on July 19, 2013. Inmate Guillermo Caughlan, 25, ADC #223125, and inmate Salvador Reyes, 27, ADC #248550, each entered guilty pleas to one count each of Dangerous Assault by a Prisoner, a Class 2 felony. Each inmate was sentenced to the maximum term of 10 years, which will be added to the sentences for their previous crimes.
